Recently, I discovered that there is a new firmware update available for the Canon R5. This sparked my interest in understanding how this update could potentially address certain irritating issues and enhance the performance of my camera. Recognizing that I might not be the only one who has been unaware of the significance of firmware updates, I decided to share what I've learned. For instance, I will outline a few reasons why it's essential to stay informed about these updates from your manufacturer and provide guidance on how to carry out the update process.

How To Check for Updates and Install Latest Firmware

If your’re curious to see if you have any updates on your camera firmware, or if you’re a Canon R5 user like me, here are the instructions to update the firmware on your camera:

  1. Google your “camera make and model + firmware update + year” to see if you have any available updates. If you use the Canon R5, use this link for the most recent update: Canon EOS R5 Firmware Update, Version 2.0

  2. Select either for MAC or Windows for download depending on your computer

  3. Insert a memory card into your computer (Can also plug camera into computer as an option)

  4. Drag and drop the downloaded file onto the memory card

  5. Eject card from computer and insert into your camera

  6. Turn camera on, and in the Menu, select the wrench and click Firmware. Click the set button to install the latest firmware.

  • Another option is to download the Canon Camera Connect app on your phone and download the firmware update. This will require you to connect to your camera via the app to update.


Updates included in the Canon EOS R5 Version 2.0 Firmware

Here are a few of the fixes included with the latest firmware update:

  1. Enables servo zooming to be remotely controlled from EOS Utility or Camera Connect when Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E2?PZ-E2B is attached to a compatible lens

  2. Enables up to 2 TB to be used on CF express cards larger than 2 TB

  3. Fixes an issue that may cause the camera, in rare instances, to experience a delayed restart after the camera has gone into Auto Power Off.

  4. Fixes an issue that, under specific circumstances, may prevent the image from being displayed in the viewfinder or on the screen causing the camera to stop operating, or Error Code 70 may be displayed

  5. Fixes other minor issues
